Project GO participants planning to travel abroad MUST have a valid U.S. passport in their possession no later than 90 days before the anticipated travel date. Passport processing times have greatly increased and it can take 3 months or more to receive a new passport.  We encourage you to apply for your passport as soon as possible.  Furthermore, many destinations require student visas, which take additional processing time. ABOUT THE CRITICAL LANGUAGE INSTITUTE

The Critical Language Institute (CLI) is an integral component of The Melikian Center for Russian, Eurasian, & East European Studies. Every summer, CLI provides intensive language training in 14 languages. The Melikian Center is a National Resource Center supported by the Department of Education as well as a Foreign Language and Area Studies Center focusing on building Intercultural Education programs and serving as a hub for research, teaching, and innovative partnerships. As a part of the domestic program, students have an opportunity to learn the cultural and linguistic traditions of Indonesia while interacting and thinking across cultural boundaries with students from 14 other language and cultural programs. 

PROGRAM SPECIFIC DETAILS

PREREQUISITES

Placement exam demonstrating knowledge equivalent to ASU course you will be taking while overseas. By the end of the course, students should expect to reach a Russian proficiency between intermediate mid and advanced high (depending on level).

10- or 8-Credit, 8-Week Program:  

10 credit hours of 2nd year Russian  OR  8 credit hours of 3rd/4th year Russian

This intensive program provides four-hours of instruction everyday providing grammar, conversation, and comprehension lessons every day. During each week, student will meet with their Russian coaches to practice conversation and complete cultural visits. Students live together in home stays often participating in family initiated cultural visits and experiences. Students also participate in weekend trips, in Russian, with their coaches to historical, cultural, and environmental destinations. 

Surrounded by supportive Russian speakers, receiving daily hands-on training, and not speaking English for 8 weeks, students make extremely rapid progress and are expected to exit the program with a proficiency of Intermediate Advanced or better.

ABOUT THE LOCATION

The overseas location of the programs will be in the Russian-speaking city of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Situated at the base of the 15,000-foot tall Tian-Shan mountain range, Bishkek is a vibrant city of 1 million with a rich and colorful blend of Central Asian, Russian and Western influences. Russian is the predominant language of the city. Modern Bishkek is known for its hospitality, sight-seeing attractions and its plethora of youth-oriented cafes and eateries.
