Program Details

This course is a total 10-week program, including a 2-week domestic and an 8-week abroad portion. The 2-week domestic portion is designed as a preparation course for the abroad portion and includes 50-hours of intensive language training and 10-hours of isolated immersion at the University of Montana. The 8-week abroad portion includes practical language training focusing on developing speaking skills, cultural experiences, and diverse field trips offered by Korean Language Institute (KLI) at the Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn total 8 credits (2 from University of Montana and 6 from Yonsei University). Students will need to contact their respective university offices in advance for verification on how many credits can be transferred and accepted.

Additional Details:

The objective of the program is to equip students with communicative skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing that can be directly applied to their practical usage of Korean. The course places high emphasis on effective and meaningful communication, and employing Korean in real-world contexts.

Prerequisites:

Year 1 Program: Completion of one semester of Korean at a college-level course or equivalent skills prior to the program start date

Year 2 Program: Completion of two semesters of Korean at a college-level course or equivalent skills prior to the program start date

Year 3 Program: Completion of four semesters of Korean at a college-level course or equivalent skills prior to the program start date

Domestic Portion (Missoula, Montana):

  • Students will stay with a roommate(s) in Double Tree Hotel Missoula during the two-week domestic part of the program.
  • Students will take intensive language and culture training, including pre-departure orientation during the domestic portion of the program in the DCLCP (Defense Critical Language and Culture Program) Language Training Center at the University of Montana.
  • On the first week Saturday, students will participate in an isolated immersion, which allows the students to experience total immersion in the target language prior to their abroad departure. 

Abroad Portion (Seoul, South Korea):

  • Students will stay with a roommate in dorm or residence hotel on/near campus.
  • At the beginning of the language course, students will take a placement test by Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute (KLI) and will be assigned to a class based on the test result.
  • Yonsei University is considered one of the most prestigious universities in South Korea. Its Korean Language classes focus on developing speaking skills, providing students with curriculum that integrates various interactive classroom activities, as well as after class cultural activities and field trips. Students will also be paired with Korean students for additional language and cultural experiences.
  • Cultural classes and field trips include: Interacting with Korean ROTC students, Taekwondo, traditional food making, War Museum of Korea, Traditional Village, trip to DMZ/JSA and other critical spots to obtain global awareness and understanding of Korean society and the region. * The cultural programs are subject to change*

To apply for the program, please submit a completed online application in the Project GO Central Application System. All the applicants must complete the submission of commander recommendation, academic recommendation, and academic transcripts before the application deadline.

Successful candidates will be contacted by the selection committee as a part of comprehensive review process.
