Program Details

Texas A&M’s Russian as a Second Language in Kyrgyzstan is an intensive 8-week summer abroad language program. Students will attend Russian language classes each morning during the week, and participate in language building activities in the afternoons. A range of activities are offered and consist of peer-tutoring sessions, workshops demonstrating traditional Kyrgyz cooking or handcrafts, and excursions to historically or culturally significant sites. Students have the option of stay in dorms or with a Kyrgyz family in a home-stay and go on weekend trips to other areas, including a horse trek into the mountains.

Project GO is an initiative sponsored by the Defense Language and National Security Education Office and administered by the Institute of International Education.

Additional Details:

Prerequisite: Participating students must have completed a minimum of 1st-year Russian instruction by the end of Spring 2024.

The 8-week program offers 128 contact hours of language instruction and provides up to 10 credit hours. Classes are small, focusing on the fundamentals of Russian grammar to improve communication skills and increase language proficiency. Additionally, cultural programs are integrated into the curriculum to augment language learning and to develop intercultural communication skills. Students can enroll in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year programs.

The program is located in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It is one of the few former Soviet Republics where Russian is an official language and is the primary language used for business and higher education. Located at the base of the Tian-Shan mountains in the heart of Central Asia, Bishkek has a rich history and colorful blend of Central Asian, Russian, Soviet, and Western cultural influences. Known for its hospitality, students will enjoy experiencing the local culture in a modern vibrant city.

Students will be responsible for any payments due prior to scholarship disbursal. Scholarship money will be disbursed in late May 2024. Scholarship funds will reimburse costs incurred before the scholarship was available to recipients

There will be multiple orientations before departure and attendance is mandatory for program participation.
