Navy ROTC Policies and Initiatives

Language Scholarships

20-30 scholarships are available annually nationwide through Navy ROTC's Language Skills, Regional Expertise, and Cultural Awareness (LREC) Program. Midshipmen must agree to major in one of the following languages and/or regional/cultural areas: Africa, Central Asia, East Asia/China, Middle/Central/Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, Russia/Eastern Europe, Arabic, Cambodian, Central Asian Languages, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, French, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Kurdish, Malay, Pashto, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish, Swahili, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Language Requirements

LREC midshipmen must minor in a foreign language associated with their academic major if their academic major is a culture or region listed above. If the midshipman's academic major is a foreign language, then the language requirements match the academic major requirements of the midshipman's college or university.

Support for NSEP Programs

NROTC does not generally fund components of NSEP programs.

Monetary Incentives

NROTC monetary incentives are limited to LREC majors.

Other Summer Language and Culture Options

NROTC hosts FOREX cruises annually. CNO N525 and Fleet Commanders provide a list of eligible countries to Naval Service Training Command (NSTC). NROTC units provide nomination packages for NSTC to select midshipmen based on a combination of language ability, GPA, aptitude, and class standing. NROTC has no requirement for midshipmen to speak the language of the host country.
