Initiatives
Internationalizing Senior Military Colleges
Project GO currently supports five of the six Senior Military Colleges (SMCs). Because SMCs have large ROTC populations on campus, Project GO requirements for SMCs differ from requirements of colleges and universities that are not SMCs.
SMCs are not required to support students outside their own programs (although some SMCs do). SMCs are also not required to contribute to the national language infrastructure by offering domestic summer institutes or study abroad programs open nationally (although some SMCs do).
SMCs are required to have long-term plans for internationalizing their campuses. These plans include increasing the number of students who study abroad, increasing the number of ROTC students who study a critical language, increasing the number of students from other countries who study on campus, when possible, and increasing interaction among international students and ROTC students.
Project GO funding for Senior Military Colleges has supported language instructors, tutoring centers, curricular materials, and outreach activities for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian at SMCs. Most of Project GO funding for SMCs supports students directly as scholarship funding for study abroad or for summer domestic language study.
North Georgia College and State University (NGCSU)'s project funds two Chinese language faculty who are working to develop a Chinese major in addition to teaching classes in Chinese. NGCSU's grant also supports students at the NGCSU summer language institute in Chinese, Arabic, and Russian. Main Languages: Chinese, Arabic, Russian.
Virginia Military Institute (VMI)'s project created and staffed a tutoring center to help students improve their reading, writing, and aural/oral proficiency skills. Additionally, funding has provided scholarships for dozens of students to study Arabic in the summer in Morocco. Main Language: Arabic.
Texas A&M's project recruits ROTC students into Arabic and Chinese, grows university infrastructure in Arabic and Chinese, and supports study abroad for ROTC students. Texas A&M is also supporting ROTC engineering students in completing engineering courses on the Texas A&M campus in Qatar. Main Languages: Chinese, Arabic.
The Citadel's project funds an instructor for Chinese and provides scholarships for students to study abroad in China. Main Language: Chinese.
Norwich University's project provides scholarships for Norwich students to participate in existing summer language institutes and study abroad programs. Main Language: Chinese.
