Estimated at 1500 to 2000 languages of five groupings:
- Afro-Asiatic
- Nilo-Saharan
- Niger-Saharan
- Khoisan
- Austronesian
Additionally, one of several colonial languages are spoken in most countries.
What countries are included in East Africa?
- Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are the core nations making up the East African Community;
- Rwanda and Burundi are also considered part of East Africa;
- The United Nations considers the entire east coast of Africa, except Egypt, as part of the Eastern Africa sub-region.

- Nairobi is the major economic and cultural center for northeast sub-Saharan Africa
- Strong traditions in the arts: music, dance, crafts
- Strong traditions and favorable conditions for agriculture

- Free primary educational system; stable fee-based secondary educational system; a good system of universities
